About The Greene Beanery
The Greene Beanery is a result of my love of coffee that began many years ago as a college student. My sister made the mistake of putting sugar in the cup of coffee that she had fixed for mom who did not put sugar in her coffee. I happened to be close by, so she handed the cup to me and said, “Here. Drink this.” I did. I was hooked. The passion I have about coffee quite honestly is much more than simply how it tantalizes my taste buds. There is something about having a cup of hot coffee in my hands, or within my reach, as I am reading or sitting with my husband or with my family and friends that promotes a warm, peaceful feeling inside.
Nicole Johnson writes in her book, Fresh Brewed Life, “Coffee is far more than a beverage. It is an invitation to life, disguised as a cup of warm liquid. It’s a trumpet wake-up call or a gentle rousing hand on your shoulder. Coffee is a lingering scent, better than any potpourri. Coffee is an experience, an offer, a rite of passage, a good excuse to get together.” Tell me the truth, isn’t there something that just makes you feel warm and cozy inside when someone says, “Let’s get together for coffee”? You may not even like coffee, but those words still serve as an invitation to coming together with friends and family who can provide a much needed outlet for venting about the frustrations of life or for simply talking and sharing laughter.
It was through reading this book in 1999 that the dream was born to own a coffee shop someday. Then over the years on family vacations I would visit the Morning View Coffee House and Roastery in Nags Head, NC, where I was fascinated as I watched the owner roast her own coffee, and I knew if I ever had a shop I wanted to roast my own beans.
Obviously many years have passed since that first cup of coffee. The dream had been simmering inside a body that is not known for being adventurous, but the passion would not go away. After many prayers for guidance and wearing my family and friends out with sharing my dream, I took to heart this quotation by Anais Nin which says, “And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
I bought a small home roaster and was amazed at how good fresh roasted coffee tasted. I shared my coffee with family and friends who were equally impressed, and I realized I was ready to be “risky” and “blossom” and explore this passion on a grander scale by looking into buying a commercial roaster. Thus began the journey which ultimately led me to attend a roasting seminar at Diedrich Roasters in Sandpoint, Idaho, and from which I later purchased my Diedrich IR 2.5 roaster. I began roasting from home in September, 2012 selling coffee at various locations around the county. In 2014 we purchased the former Bayberry Inn, and began the conversion to The Greene Beanery that opened in February, 2015. That is the short version of how The Greene Beanery was born. If you want to know more, just pull up a chair. I’ll hand you a cup of my fresh roast and say, “Here. Drink this,” and I’ll tell you the rest of my story.
